Yep a good shuffle is important.
I personally do a mix of power shuffles and other shuffles all at once between games.
It also helps to avoid scooping your field and individually put the cards in your deck randomly.

Oh and I don't know if you do this already but sleeve your decks.
It pains me physically to see cards get worn out.

Just keep an eye on your land/nonland ratio as well as your manacurve and you should have better results most of the time.

well I was playing on a very standard starter white so it was pretty much just a shit shuffle

Just keep an eye on your land/nonland ratio as well as your manacurve and you should have better results most of the time.

thank you very many, this is exactly what I needed for figuring out what I might want

and technically it's not some friends, but a group being started in my school by a teacher and a few other enthusiasts

I played my first game today and got wiped by another beginner because I drew 3 mana at the start and then got nothing for about 20 turns ))

Oh I guess some friends got you into playing.

Well as far as playstyles go...

White has a lot of lifegain and fair bit of response cards and abilities
Green has manaramp(fetch mana from deck/play additional mana per turn) and big manathirsty creatures
Blue has card draw and is usually spell focused
Red has burn cards and is fast
Black is good at killing stuff and has generally nasty cards and effects

I would also take a careful look at how each block plays
Check out the card database for details and stuff.

Oh and save some money for Unstable if you want some...rather silly funtimes.

I seem to be picking this up, is anyone bothered/interested enough to tell me if there's some type of particular playstyle differences between different colour decks? I've been told to try and pick up a red and a green starter deck because those are the ones my group are missing, but I'd like to actually figure out what I might personally enjoy/want to have
