The original gwent in the witcher was... insanity to say the least. Huge power combos, massive swings and insanely OP spy cards. They changed this, which I think was a good idea if you want to make a somewhat serious/competitive game, but I just don't like the changes tbh.

The game feels extremely stale. Everything is about ''power'' from what I gather from my 2~3 hours I played now. Nearly all cards have effects or abilities, but most of them are just ''deal damage to another unit''. DMG and HP are now one factor, meaning if a 7 attack unit takes 5 damage, they turn into a 2 attack unit. But nearly every card has 6~9 total power. So either they are a vanilla 8 power card, or a 4 power card that deals 4 damage. This just makes everything stale as fuck. Even though every card played is different, the amount of power they put on the board is fundamentally the same. Getting a swing in gameplay is pretty rare and can really only be achieved through weather effects or just retarded plays. Or OP cards. I'm still playing with the starter cards, but there is a very very clear power creep present already. One card has 2 attack and deals 5 dmg. Another card has 6 attack and deals 4 dmg. One is 7 power in total, one 10.

Another problem is card advantage. Card advantage is absolutely ridiculous in this game. Seeing how nearly every card falls in the 6~9 power category, having an extra card over your opponent pretty much means you've won the game. Which is also why the monster class atm is the strongest. Their passive effect allows for one randomly chosen minion to stay on their board. So if you play a 12 power OP Geralt card on round one, it's going to stay there for the next round. And considering there is NO other card that outclasses Geralt, the opponent is forced to play atleast 2 cards to win the round. But now they are a card behind + your 12 power Geralt stays for the next round, so they pretty much will lose the next two rounds unless you fuck up real bad.

In the end, I think I'm just salty it's not more like the original gwent. wwwwwwww
