during the prohibition era the amount of alcoholics increased when compared to beforehand because everyone was drinking really strong alcoholic drinks because it wasn't worthwhile to make anything else

kind of a similar thing has happened with pot in that it's been bred specifically to increase the levels of thc (like liquor compared to beer) in order to minimize the risk of doing something illegal while being efficient at it, making for a far more potent product more suited for escapism than medicinal use which in turn causes a lot of people to think that it's a good thing it was made illegal in the first place

then there's also the fact that as long as pot is kept illegal america will have a steady influx of prisoners that they are bound by contract to supply to their privately owned prisons that can also be used as cheap workers
