It's Atago class DDG-178 JS Ashigara

(To be fair it is a scaled up Kongou class which is somewhat based on Arleigh Burke Flight I design).

I thought that USA was all up Japan's anal hole as far as military goes. After all, the sole reason Japan is so advanced today is because of how much money USA dropped on it to get a stable base near Russian/Chinese territory.

I'll have to look into this whole Japanese modern military thing, because as far as I remember, USA forced its treaty of mutual cooperation onto Japan after WW2, restricting it to only having a self-defense force. I guess I'm just THAT much out of the loop when it comes to modern-day Japan and its military....

It is still a self defence force, and as far as hardware goes most of it is either entirely domestic or modified western designs.

Good examples are the guided missile destroyer fleet, which are based on the Arleigh Burke class but made in japan to japanese specs with just some stuff from US (radars etc. , though parts of the AEGIS system are still domestically manufactured). Or F-15J and F-2. Both are based on american designs but made in japan to japanese specs (with the F-2 being far further modified from F-16, it even has an AESA radar!).

No wonder I mistook that thing for an A. Burke-class then.

American designs modified to suit japanese needs, or completely japanese designs (missiles, tanks, mortars etc. etc.).

Some of the older stuff like the F-4s in use might be refits, not really sure.
