Beatmapping Thread

This is for talking about mapping in general; for talking about your favourite maps and mappers, and also for sharing your own maps and getting people to test your them.

I don't really like 2015 mapping that much because, this explain why: http://ask.fm/aqocyrale/answer/132210186720. So I've been trying to make maps that I like with the goal of eventually getting some ranked, I'm not a very good mapper, but I'm improving at least. I've just made this if anyone wants to test it and give feedback: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/373324. It's the song I suggested for the 'beatmapping project'.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

I don't even pay attention to new maps and how they're made. I just download the maps if I like the song I just check direct in newest ranked and download each song I like from the few seconds I listened to it. Most of my top ranks are songs I like. Though some are just there because I wanted the score.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

I stopped trying to rank recently and started just appreciating beatmaps for what they were, and the game is now 10x more fun for me. It's part of why I've gotten into mapping myself. I haven't played enough/don't pay enough attention to have noticed much of a decline in quality, though, but maybe that's just because I'm too new.

You want me to write up a proper mod for that map, B1rd?

I'm personally a fan of Asphyxia, RLC, Secretpipe and Fort's maps.

Sure.

Well since mapping standards have increased the newer maps aren't really lacking in 'quality', but they don't have any 'soul'. They're just generic jumps and streams. Almost all of my favourite maps were made before I joined.

As for the game, I think I might start playing seriously again, I've been playing the last couple of days I've noticed my RSI is gone and I can finally stream okay. All I need is a bit more streaming skill and I should be able to FC Ice Angel, Blue Zenith HT and perhaps Mephisto.

A few pointers I guess:
- Don't have ridiculously high slider velocity like on the first slider. Inconsistent SV is one of the most common flow breakers.
- Try to have consistent spacing in your jump patterns, and use a bigger variety of shapes than rectangles and curved lines.
- Don't start 1/4 sliders offbeat (blue lines) unless it makes sense with the music.
- When it comes aesthetics symmetry is really important. Don't be afraid to copy-paste and rotate. A lot.

Also I made a series on simple mapping techniques. It was mostly done as a joke, but maybe someone will actually find it helpful. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P … dAv5z_c4hq

Thanks for the pointers.

-I think having that slider velocity makes sense since they're slider shapes independent of the main map.
-is there a problem with my jumps? I thought they were ok
-is there a problem with having sliders on a blue tick at the end of the stream? My streaming is a bit spam-tier so I don't really notice how this stuff affects gameplay. But if I were to change the sliders on blue ticks I'd have to change a lot of stuff
-Yeah, I haven't went through and tidied everything up yet, I'll go through and make sure everything is symmetrical soon.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

The slider velocity makes it very difficult to play, though. I can barely hold combo through the one at the start, which isn't nice at all.

Your jumps just feel sort of randomly placed IMO which is why a bigger variety of patterns and a more structured feeling might be of benefit.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

I agree, I don't think the fast slider/triple + jumps flow very well. I'll have a look at changing that stuff tomorrow.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

I guess I'll link my shitmaps here too.

I also mapped Reol - No Title inbetween these but lost the file somewhere. Might ask somebody at some point if arsed.

Might map something again some day. I like mapping, but there are so few nice songs I feel like doing, and the end result never feels satisfactory.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

Those are great. You could get them ranked, even. Perhaps reduce the spacing at the very start of the first one. (and make it ar8, but that's just me)

Re: Beatmapping Thread

It was originally AR8 but one guy wanted me to make it ar9, so I went with 8,5. Might switch it back to 8 tho, I agree that it works better.
I have no interest in getting my maps ranked, not like anybody would play them anyway since they don't have those dank pp screenjumps. smith

Re: Beatmapping Thread

I'll check it out in a bit.

Helix is finally ranked https://osu.ppy.sh/b/471079

It's a great mapset. Hollowing's diff is pretty hilarious.

Re: Beatmapping Thread

Because HW is HW and nobody wants to call out HW as a mapper because she's popular
