Well, by taking a look at the Oxford Dictionary, I've come to the conclusion that you indeed can love even someone you've never even talked to before, yes - however, what I meant to ask was if there is a point to such love?
Your love is going to be as vague as your knowledge of that person, and you cannot tell me that you know someone you personally never met in your life. Heck, people spend 50 years together and they still know very little about each other, let alone two people on the internet. So the point is - yes, you can love, but what do you gain from it? It's the same as loving an alien that exists entirely in your mind and has no connections with the reality whatsoever.
Does that not mean that you can love an anime character with the same intensity and amount of affection as you would a normal human being? Does that not mean that you could also be with one without judgement if the love is there?
What separates the "long distance relationships" from relationships you have with fictional characters? Inherently, they're both the same. You know nothing of the person on the other side - and that means that even their very existence is questionable by the rules of logic; wouldn't that mean that the societies we live in strongly direct our life, even if only passively? The society you're a part of tells you that dating someone 8 thousand miles away is fine in the modern world, but loving that fictional animu character and kissing a printout with his/her face is creepy and nerdy.
Unless you actually met the person you're dating, you can easily make an assumption that the person doesn't even exist, making the relationship just as valid as one with a fictional character.
It's pretty damn funny how our surroundings affect us even if we don't realise it at all.
