Love is essentially the bond between us. Its basis is reciprocation, regardless of the motive and background. It can be it out of competitiveness, spite, vanity, care, lust, or whatever else it just so happens to be, but it's love. Maybe it's not as intense (there are "levels" of sorts to it) since we don't know each other so well or interact as much, but it's there. There can be love even in hatred, but certainly not in indifference.

To answer your question, the point of love is that reciprocation. We'll support each and bring each other down at times, but we'll only continue to grow and live on thanks to that.

By definition, it would be impossible to love an inanimate object/imaginary being since it cannot reciprocate, though you can achieve a sort of sub-love with it.

No no, that wasn't the point here mate. The point was to prove the difference between you and an anime character (or any fictional one at that) when you aren't here with me. Fundamentally, you're as real as EneT's avatar to me and spawning words on the screen, talking or even being on cam doesn't make you any more real than it, as it is just a bunch of pixels.
We see the world with our own eyes, right? Our eyes are the means of us getting a feedback from the outside world, working just like a computer monitor, and in some instances we cannot trust our own eyes - the tool we use to SEE what is real is flawed. What makes the monitor any better then? Don't tell me you can't deceive someone, even on camera and with full sound, as that has been done MANY times before.

My point is that you cannot possibly prove that the other person you're talking to over a long distance exists in ANY way, shape or form, thus bringing it on the same level as a fictional character.

If I can date you, Brian, without ever meeting you (and all we need to date is to just agree to be with each other), that means that I can date a Gilgamesh AI just as validly, because his words are as real as yours are, as are his actions.

Well actually, why the fuck am I even typing it all here... just go read a book or two about Solipsism and you ought to get the idea. I don't recommend you researching it on the net as it can be a bit overbearing with no step by step explanations of what is presented in the wall of text you're reading.

For the record: I have. And also for the record: For this purpose "chatting over the internet" fulfills the having met in some form criteria.

If you're curious, this LDS relationsip did not directly result from meeting online, altough indirectly it did. I met a guy i found really nice online and we found out we live relatively close. Stuff happens and about an year later he moves away for college and we tried to keep the relationship alive despite the long distance. Obviously, that didnt work out so well.

Anyways, fictional character are not real, not living. Weter the you can prove the person on the internet to be real doesnt matter here since that person is capable of loving whereas the fictional character isnt - the whole issue with relationships with fictional characters. Also, just throwing this out here, if you want it really correct, you can not prove your very own existence to yourself even, what if you just are a fictional character someone wrote doing what we are doing right now? Thus i consider weter something is real or not, a moot point to begin with.
Yes, we always take the easy route and assume who we speak with and our own exsistence is real - after all, why waste thoughts on something ultimatively pointless and impossible to answer?

Still, I don't think it's about whether we're real or not. It's important to keep that possibility in mind, but in a place like this, it's best to take things at face value. The fact is that I respond to you and you respond to me. As a result, we get something out of every exchange. We reciprocate. It shouldn't matter if that's artificial, scripted, or fake. Not only because we can't prove that through practical means, but because it already has value in itself.

And that's what counts.
