You should check Higurashi-Wiki or something (if there is one), afaik anime did some arcs totally wrong. Especially the first season, they mixed some arcs up and eventually it looks like everyone acts like crazy with no reason.

I don't know, up until now everything made sense and I'm on the very end of season one. They explained why Mion (secretly Shion) went completely nuts seemingly without a reason, before that they explained why Kei-chan turned into such a monster so suddenly and now they're about to explain why Rena also behaved like she was in the fucking trenches of Vietnam for a couple of years.

Wasn't too hard figuring out that Satoko is a massive whiny bitch that needed to be silenced with a missile salvo, so the only thing that remains is Rika and her role in the whole thing. She seems to be the focal point of the anime from what I can see by the number of her key appearances, and she did predict the future quite scarily in the arc that came before this last one, so I'm pretty sure there's something incredibly creepy about her.

So far I've enjoyed the anime very much and I regret not having watched it for so long.

Oh and Shion best waifu.
