Yeah, never think of it as shading. You're using a change in color/values to show volume and texture, and that often involves more than just adding shades.
Think of how shades and light would act around a ball (head/breasts/deltoid) or a tube (arms/neck).
I'd also recommend getting used to just picking the appropriate color for the job instead of using the multiply function, but there's a zillion ways to do it anyway so just try everything out and see what works for you.
