GTA V on sale; should I buy or nay?
I personally dislike that game.
How fond are you of GTA in general?

Yes it does because singular they is a cool and legit thing for times when 1) The gender is not known, 2) The gender hasn't been introduced, and 3) The gender doesn't matter.
It's also less cumbersome than always substituting "he or she" and isn't a silly made-up-this-year word like Xir.
"Have you met your pen pal in person yet?" "No, they told me they didn't want to really meet yet."

I quite like the driving in it.

I'm not even talking about that, I'm talking about when you've already referenced a person. And in that case, it is retarded and unacceptable.

What are you going to say if point #2? Bird drinks his or her coffee? Fuck that

You would use that, default to whatever sex you thought the person was, or word it differently. You wouldn't just make up your own definition for things. Saying 'their' makes you think you're actually referring to someone else's property.

Except we have the magic of context to thank for this.

Except often there is ambiguous context.
If you really want your gender-neutral pronoun, consider 'xir' instead.

If you seeno problem with using "he" as the default pronoun evenwhen not referring to he, I see no problem with using "their" as the default when talking about one person.

Except I say that, I said default to whatever you thought most likely. And at least with that, at worst you're only getting the sex wrong, not messing up the actual meaning of the sentence. So no, that's not a valid justification.

I think context is enough for your example sentences of using it. There's ambiguity in languages - so what. it's far far more useful in terms of sentences like, "my friend is bugging me." "why are they doing that?"
Are you going to interrupt the flow of the sentence just to blurt out a "he or she" that is just an annoying, cumbersome phrase. i know it's a person and I don't give a shit about the gender -just use one word because it doesn't matter.

Adding this into a different post because I just thought of it
"B1rd drinks his coffee."
B1rd, why are you drinking some other dude's coffee? You see? THE EXACT SAME ambiguity is there.
