Also to all you neanderthal fucks a few pages back who don't know how to cook a steak.
Rule #1, high heat, you want to incinerate it so you get a light char on both sides for a nice crispy brown surface, without turning it into charcoal, once one side is done, flip it and leave it there for about 66-75% of the time you spent charring the first side (so you actually cool the stove down a bit to prevent overcooking it), then lower the heat to medium or medium-low depending how you want your steak.
Once both sides are charred it's time to decide how you want your steak, medium-rare, medium-done, or god forbid, well done (you fucking unsophisticated pleb).
This highly depends how thick of a cut you have, for every centimeter of thickness you want to cook it anywhere between 30-60s per step of 'done', medium-rare? You should only need to let it sit for at most a minute extra. For a nice medium-done you want about 3 minutes.
And don't fucking poke the steak around like an amateur, only flip it once and leave it there (unless you notice it's getting way too charred on the 2nd side, if so then flip it once more), poking the steak puts pressure on it which causes juices to seep out.
Now why high heat? A good cut of steak is full of juices, if you cook it on anything lower than medium-high you will cause the juices to evaporate and seep out of the steak, leaving you with a slab of leather in your pan, by charring both sides ASAP you prevent most of these juices from escaping and keeping the meat tender.
If you have a shitty cut that's dried up and stale you want to find a recipe for a marinade that you like and let that fucker soak in it over night in your fridge to soak up and tenderize.
If you still end up with a slab of leather you should probably kill yourself for ruining a good steak. (Unless the steak was really fucking shit quality and you thought you could do without a marinade in which case you should still kill yourself for being an inexperienced pleb).
But seriously though, cooking, just like everything in life, requires practice, these tips should help you make a less shitty steak.

Butter and extra virgin olive oil tend to smoke easily, that's why I like to use beef tallow or clarified butter. As a side note this was some top quality cultured craft butter, $9.50/200g.
