Can we instead have better mental health services so that potential pedophiles/child molesters/whatever can get treatment for themselves and learn to control themselves so they don't ruin their victims lives' or their own?

If you are attracted to children then you probably don't have that much self-control anyway, but the problem is that the moment when people usually find out someone is a pedophile is when they molest somebody, because most people wouldn't go tell that they are a pedophile.

Not quite, battler. You see, when two or more things have something in common, it doesn't mean that there is little difference between them. That is to say, just because you could compare two things and got one thing under that list, doesn't mean there's not much contrast between them. For example, we can observe that IppE and Mara are both Finnish. Despite that one similarity, that speaks nothing of their insurmountable differences in background, taste, and personality.

To look at the point in case, pedophiles and child molesters do share one thing in common with their particular disposition toward minors. In fact, one person could be both of these things at the same time. However, they are still two different things, one being dominated by your background and the other by your sexual deviations. You can't be a child molester unless you have molested a child, and you can't be a pedophile unless you are attracted to minors.

Now, you could argue that we should still punish pedophiles on grounds that they're the only demographic that could become child molesters, but at that point you would be judging people based on what they might do rather than on what they have done. That's no good.
